Snake Island

snake_island_DS.jpg (71972 bytes)
Snake Island is surrounded by the water of the Lake except for a narrow connecting strip of land enabling walkers to enter.  It was created as part of the Wetland Project in 1991/2.   It has a path all the way around its edge allowing good views of wildlife such as dragonflies flying over the surface of the lake.  Because of its proximity to water, the path is often the place where a walker will find a grass snake basking in the warmth of the summer sun.  Visiting parties use Snake Island for pond study.  The shallow water is easily accessible from the bank on Snake Island.   Willow, bramble and grasses make up a dense thicket in the middle of the island.
