Elder

Sambucus nigra

A fast growing shrub or small tree occasionally reaching 10 metres. A mature tree's bark is deeply fissured, while broken twigs are quite pithy inside. The flowers bloom in clusters and smell of cats. The berries appear in clusters in early Autumn and are black or very dark red. It grows well on disturbed soils.
