Guelder Rose

Viburnum opulus

A small deciduous tree reaching 4 metres in height. The twigs are greyish and without hairs. The leaves are about 5-7cm long and have 3 or 5 sharply toothed lobes. The cluster of white flowers is about 5-10cm across, the largest flowers on the edges are sterile and will produce no fruit. The berries are red and remain on the tree after the leaves have fallen. Prefers to grow in damp woodlands.
