Scots Pine Pinus sylvestris  |
  ||||||||
The only native British pine. It can grow to between 35-40 metres in height and has a characteristic rusty brown or orange coloured bark. The needles are bluish-grey and about 4-7cm long. Young trees grow in a fairly conical shape, while the Scottish race develops a flatter top and more open structure as it matures. Sometimes planted for timber, it is also present in heathland as a naturalised species throughout England & Wales. |
