Western Hemlock

Tsuga heterophylla

Evergreen conifer growing to 70 metres in height in its native western North America. It has a narrow long crown and the top of the tree (the leading shoot) normally leans over to one side. The bark is reddish brown with scaling ridges. The leaves are of several different lengths and emerge from the stems at several different angles. Widely grown in plantations in Western Europe, it can tolerate lower levels of light than most other conifers.
