Wild Service Tree

Sorbus torminalis

Unusual looking tree growing to 25 metres in height. Its bark is greyish brown and flaky. The 10cm long leaves have 6-10 pointed lobes and are dark green on both sides. The undersides of the leaves are hairy when young. Leaf buds are green. The clusters of white flowers are similar in appearance to those of Rowan but are larger and more widely spread. The berries are brown and form in late Summer. In the UK it is associated with Pedunculate Oak and tends to grow on poor, damp soils.
