The Wet Woodland Bird Survey

Jay       Garrulus glandarius

Appearance A large woodland bird with distinct plumage. The brown crown is streaked black with white. It has a black mustache and a buff-brown back. The underparts are pinkish buff, the wings and tail black. In flight it shows a bold white rump and white patches on the inner wing. It also has a small blue and white barred patch on the top part of the wings. 
Size: 33-36cm tall 
Voice Harsh kaaa.
Habitat Forests, hedges, heaths and gardens.
Food Nuts, nestlings, worms and insects.
Breeding Habits 5-7 eggs in a cup-like nest in a tree fork.  Incubation takes 16-17 days and fledging takes 19-20 days. 
1 brood per year; April-May.
Location in Wet Woodland It was heard a few times just outside the wet woodland.  It would be expected to occur in thewet woodland area but it just wasn't there while the survey was taking place.
