A traditional shaving horse (left). This is a design which
has been used for centuries, if not millennia. It would often be used to produce items in
woodland clearings. |

A traditional pole lathe (left), a machine for turning
wood. It is operated by a wooden treadle. The design is possibly 3000 years old. |

The lathe revolves while the
operator guides a sharp metal tool such as a chisel along the object and in so doing
creates the desired finished shape. Note that these tools for
shaping and working wood, are themselves made of wood. |
